When I was scoring the film Famous Fred we were looking for a song that would bring the curtain down on the character Fred played and sung by Lenny Henry.
I was co/writing the lyrics with Nigel Crowle but this particular song I sat and wrote on my own one night in the studio. I wrote it in memory of my mum Joan who had been a huge inspiration to me and a great supporter of my career when I was struggling in my early years. Kym Ryan came in to the studio to do the demo vocals for Lenny. The song was rejected for the film but Kyms vocal and emotion on the track is stunning and any time I listen to it, it makes me feel emotional, even more so now that Kym isn’t with us anymore. The demo is raw and you can hear Rob Reed fishing for a couple of sounds on the intro, drums played by Tim Robinson and bass Pete Hurley.
